Shigeru Ban studied architecture in the U.S. and is known for his architecture using paper tubes, containers, and other materials, as well as his disaster relief activities.
In 2014, he received the Pritzker Prize, an international award in the field of architecture, and in 2017, he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon and the Mother Teresa Social Justice Award, the first Japanese to receive such an award. 2022, he received the Prince of Spain Award for his support for victims of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
